Real Madrid suffer the first defeat of the Mourinho era

Real Madrid lost 1-0 to Real Betis at the Estadio de la Cartuja in matchweek 4 of LaLiga on Friday 4 September. Troy Parrott scored the only goal on 81 minutes. Goalkeeper Álvaro Valles then saved Kylian Mbappé's stoppage-time penalty to secure Betis's three points.

The result was the first defeat since José Mourinho returned to Real Madrid for a second spell in the summer. It is the first time since the 2014-15 season that Real Madrid have lost one of their opening four league matches.

Despite the defeat, Real Madrid remain in contention with nine points from four matches; their biggest win of the season so far was a 4-0 against Málaga. They host Inter in their opening Champions League match on 8 September.
