Champions PSG make their worst Ligue 1 start in 17 years

Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain have made an unexpected start to the 2026-27 Ligue 1 season. After 2-2 draws with Rennes on 23 August and Lille on 28 August, PSG lost 2-1 at home to Monaco on 4 September; Marquinhos scored for PSG, with Nazinho and Idumbo on target for Monaco.

With only two points from three matches, PSG sit 12th. According to Opta's statistics, it is the club's worst league start since the 2007-08 season. Head coach Luis Enrique said he was not overly concerned by the table; curiously, despite the difficult start, it was announced that he had signed a new contract with the club through to 2030.

PSG's dip contrasts with their standing in the Champions League: before the new season the club was listed as the tournament favourite in the betting markets.
