Bundesliga surprise: Augsburg top the table as Bayern fail to score
Augsburg have won their opening two Bundesliga matches to go top; Bayern Munich were held to a goalless draw away at newly promoted Schalke.
The first surprise of the 2026-27 Bundesliga season came from Augsburg. Beating Schalke 04 and Eintracht Frankfurt in the opening two matchweeks, they scored seven goals and conceded only one; the results gave them two wins from two for the first time since 2020-21 and took them top.
The second surprise came from a dip at the summit: Bayern Munich drew 0-0 away at newly promoted Schalke 04 on 5 September. It was the first time in more than 18 months that Bayern had failed to score in a Bundesliga match, and it cost them top spot. Newly promoted Elversberg have also caught the eye with a good start.
The results point to an unexpected balance settling over the opening weeks of the new Bundesliga season.
