The new Bundesliga season opens: champions Bayern Munich host Stuttgart

The 2026-27 Bundesliga season begins today in Germany. The two sides met four times last season and Bayern won every one: they took the Super Cup 2-1, won the league meeting in December 5-0, sealed the title away at Stuttgart with a 4-2 win in April, and crowned the season with a 3-0 victory in the German Cup final. In 132 competitive meetings since 1963, Bayern have won 88 to Stuttgart's 28; Stuttgart's only win since 2018-19 came on the final matchday of 2023-24.

The individual numbers reflect Bayern's dominance too: Harry Kane has scored 14 goals in eight matches against Stuttgart, making them the opponent he has scored most against in the Bundesliga. Under head coach Vincent Kompany, Bayern have not lost a season opener since 2011 (12 wins, two draws); they beat RB Leipzig 6-0 in last season's opener.

On the other side, Sebastian Hoeneß's Stuttgart begin the season with a notable attacking group. Striker Deniz Undav scored 19 Bundesliga goals last season, second only to Golden Boot winner Harry Kane, and is again seen as the key man in Stuttgart's forward line.
