Possession as a means, not an end
Fenerbahçe are likely to see more of the ball; the question is what they turn it into. Circulating sideways against a compact block away from home flatters the statistics but does not create chances unless it moves the block.
The moves that do move a block are familiar: a pivot dropping between the centre-backs to beat the first pressing line numerically, a winger tucking in so the full-back can overlap, and third-man combinations to reach the edge of the box.
An early goal would change the entire balance for Fenerbahçe: the block would have to open, and the advantage in transition would swing to the visitors.
Greenwood, Kerem and width
The reported XI has Greenwood and Kerem Aktürkoğlu wide, both inverted and both happy to cut inside. That hands width to the full-backs and adds bodies around the box.
The cost is again at the back: with both full-backs high, the rest defence drops to three. For whoever replaces Oosterwolde on the left, that may be the most tested responsibility of the night.
Asensio's positioning between the lines can ease the equation: when he receives, he draws the opposition midfield towards him and reduces the wide duels to one-against-one.
The rotation question
The Lyon tie on 18 August bears directly on how this squad is handled. Fenerbahçe began the season early in Champions League qualifying, and this is a fifth competitive fixture after four.
There is no verified information on who will be rested. The only certainty is who made the travelling squad — and the number of names left out tells you as much as the starting eleven.
If the scoreline settles in Fenerbahçe's favour by the hour mark, early changes would be no surprise; if it stays tight, squad management drops down the list of priorities.
